PORTLAND, OREGON   For Portland Firefighter Nick Weichal helping people involved in the 12 car pileup on the Quartz Creek Bridge  on Highway 26 Tuesday morning was just like flipping a switch.  He was driving to his home on the Oregon Coast from station 21 in Portland yesterday morning when the fog was so thick and the roads were icy.  He saw some cars along the side of the road and a few more smashed up then before he knew it he was part of the chain of cars that was hit.

After climbing out the driver’s side window because the door didn’t open, He rushed to help people trapped in their cars.  A couple of vehicles were on fire.  ” I did what I could to help I went  to the vehicle where the driver  was worst off first.  then I went to the car where a couple was stuck.  it seemed like an eternity before help came,”  said Weichal.

He went to the hospital today to visit the couple and plans to go seem them again.  He says no doubt in his mind the husband could have died at the scene without help.
