TUALATIN — A bridge joint popped out of place on Interstate 205 southbound on the Tualatin River Bridge just before Stafford Road on Tuesday morning, backing up the commute for several miles well into the afternoon.
Traffic inched by in part of the right lane and on the shoulder for five hours while a crew from the Oregon Department of Transportation repaired the joint.
“Bridge joints are where two sections of concrete panels meet. A little section of that popped up. We’re still not sure why,” said ODOT’s Don Hamilton.
It doesn’t affect the structural safety of the bridge. The joints serve as a buffer between sections of the bridge that expand and contract depending on the weather.
All lanes were open just after 2:00.
