The University of Oregon’s student newspaper, The Daily Emerald, has been embarrassed by one of its ex-reporters.
An audit, led by a senior news editor, found at least eight instances in which a food writer for the Emerald fabricated quotes from people she never talked to.
The problem came to light in January when a student called the paper and told them she was quoted in a cover story but was never interviewed.
The reporter, Jessica Fisher, admitted making up quotes. She later left a note saying “I quit.”
The Daily Emerald has pulled thirteen articles from its website because of quotes that may have been faked.
