A century old American Elm tree fell victim to the winds and rain early Thursday morning at S.W. Park and Burnside. The Firestone building was spared major damage.

Urban Forester Larry McGinnis says the root system couldn’t hold the tree during the storm. Crews regularly treat city trees infected by Dutch Elm Disease but McGinnis says this wasn’t one of them.

He does say it will be replaced by another Elm resistant to the disease.
