Judge Says Yes To The Convention Center Hotel Plan

Written by Mike Turner on March 4, 2014

A Multnomah County Circuit Court judge says the county can spend hotel tax dollars without a public vote.

Opponents say the nearly 80 million dollar subsidy to Hyatt is obscene. The money would come from room taxes on the yet to be built hotel and about a fourth of that from lottery revenues.

Sports fans see this as an opportunity for Portland to  get an NBA All Star Game and NCAA Regional Tournaments if the hotel is built.

While I support having an anchor hotel in that district, it needs to come from private money and it obviously doesn’t pencil out, otherwise it would have been built already. Pushing this through without a public vote (since the public doesn’t support it) is so wrong. I’m so sick of our local politicos and judges going against the wishes of Portland time and time again.
