Beaverton, Oregon – Union Gospel Mission has opened a center for homeless women and children on SW 103rd in Beaverton. Gloria Hall, who is co-director of the Life Change Center says they wanted to be in the suburbs, instead of their downtown location at NW 3rd and Burnside.
She says it was really important that they start bringing in women with children. ” You know, that downtown area right at Burnside and 3rd Street, its very crowded; there’s a lot of people there. We feed the homeless every day and so it was really important that we find another place. And we looked all over and this was the place that got opened up.”
Union Gospel Mission has a two year lease with Cornerstone Church. Hall says after that the agency hopes to buy or build a center of its own. The Life Change Center can house up to 24 women and their children. The basic detox program runs for three months.
One woman who’s staying there and did not want her name used said its changed her life. She was a victim of domestic abuse and says she used to live in fear. “I don’t fear like I used to. I used to fear so much. I used to fear people; I used to fear the world. Just waking up; it was such a dread.”
The Center holds an open house Sunday afternoon.
