DHS Reconsidering Decision to Send 6-year-old Girl to Mexico

Written by Brett Reckamp on February 27, 2014

Governor John Kitzhaber along with a number of top Oregon lawmakers including Senator Jackie Winters have called for the Oregon Department of Human Services to review a decision to send a 6-year-old girl to Mexico to live with her biological father.  He is a convicted felon who has done time in Oregon for assault.  He was also deported.  The girl’s mother is a meth addict and has been deemed unfit to care for her child.

However, the child’s grandmother Kerrie Lechuga is currently taking care of her granddaughter and wants to maintain custody.  Erin Kelly-Steel with the DHS says the decision makers in the court had all the information in front of them before deciding the ship the girl out of the country.  For now, she will stay put.  To protect her identity, we are not releasing her name or showing her face.
