The Salem city council has approved new rules allowing cell phone towers to be closer to homes. The Statesman Journal reports the setback requirements on towers placed on properties touching residential areas have been lowered from 300 feet to 100 feet.
One of the council members who voted against the new rules, Chuck Bennett, said he’s worried it’ll be impossible to block any cell tower installation.
Salem’s Community Development Director,Glenn Gross, said if the cell tower code was too restrictive it could put the city in violation of federal law, because it would effectively prohibit a wireless provider from doing business.
