McMinnville, Oregon – The newest hire at the Yamhill County District Attorney’s Office is Marybeth, a two year old  Yellow Lab, Golden Retriever mix. District Attorney Brad Berry says her job is to help calm crime victims and witnesses who may feel anxious or stressed out about being in court.

She was trained as a service dog  but was placed with the district attorney’s office because of her extremely calm temperament. Berry says she’s only been on the job for a few weeks and has already helped a family through a murder trial and sat in the courtroom  with a child who had been sexually abused during the sentencing hearing in  that case.

Berry says when Marybeth is not at work, she lives with the victim advocate working in the district attorney’s office. Yamhill County is the first in Oregon to have a courthouse dog.
