Another round of mediation is schedule for Tuesday between Portland Public Schools and the Portland Association of Teachers.
The union is threatening to strike, starting February 20th, unless an agreement is met on a new contract. Issues still remain between the two parties, including class size, salary increases and early retirement incentives.
Christine Miles with PPS says if the teachers walk off the job, classes won’t resume for students until February 25th so the district can get the substitute teachers up to speed. And that’s not all. “Sports, music, drama. Those will all be rescheduled,” said Miles.
A strike would a first for the state’s largest school district, which has 48,000 students and 2,900 teachers.
