Pat practicing her sweeping technique
Portland, Oregon -Portland’s Evergreen Curling Club says it happens every Winter Olympics. People get curious about the sport of curling after watching it on TV and want to check it out for themselves. The group’s Wayne Brock says they’re ready with a number of learning to curl classes this month at its rink on SW 5th in Beaverton.
He admits curling does not get much respect. “I think the typical reaction is people say what are these people doing?” But he says its a very aerobic sport especially for the people who are sweeping the ice.
The sport originated in Scotland in the 1500′s. The goal is to throw a 42 pound granite stone across the rink and get it as close to the center of a group of circles as possible. Each team has four people including the cap, the person who throws the stone and two sweepers. The club has close to 200 members.
