Trader Joe’s says it will not open a store in a neighborhood where it’s not wanted.

Some neighbors who live near the empty lot at NE MLK and Alberta says the deal to open a Trader Joe’s in that location would add to the growing gentrification in the area.

The site has been the center of complaints by some neighbors who say they are being priced out of the neighborhood by rising property values and taxes.

Steven Gilliam of the Portland African American Leadership Forum says affordable housing needs to be a big part of the mix in any further development and the community, not the city should decide what goes there.
