Freeze Survivor

The freezing weather we had several weeks ago, combined with a new blast of cold air expected this week, won’t make much of a dent in the number of mosquitoes that are laying low, waiting to grow up.

Oregon State University professor Sujaya Rao, an entomologist, says mosquito larvae can withstand quite a freeze.  She says their bodies contain a chemical sort of like anti-freeze. Rao says that allows mosquitoes to “hang out and come back in spring.”

Rao points out mosquitoes survive in much colder weather than we experience in the Pacific Northwest.
