WOODLAND, Wash. — A three-year-old boy was taken to the Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland to be treated for burned hands and severe head trauma.  His father’s live-in girlfriend is in custody and charged with child assault.

Police believe 33-year-old Teresa Hernandez used a hot iron to burn the back of the little boy’s hands and then pushed him down a flight of stairs, causing severe trauma to his head.

Police were alerted to the alleged abuse by the ER staff at Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital in Vancouver.  They went to the boy’s home and interviewed his father and the girlfriend and took Hernandez into custody.

The boy is in serious, but stable condition.
