Portland, Oregon – A new apartment complex under construction in the Lloyd District includes valet service for bicycles and 12 hundred bicycle parking spaces. The Hassalo on Eighth complex is slated to open at the end of next year. It is believed to be the most bike friendly apartment complex in the country. Craig Davis with GBD Architects in The Pearl says the complex will have 657 apartment units and is located on what used to be a surface parking lot.
Davis says the complex will have two moods. “On the week days, it’s coat and tie and on the weekends, its jeans and t shirts. So it’s going to have characteristics so you can do anything there and it becomes really a gathering space for this new neighborhood that’s being created.”
The project is located near the Max and street car lines and close to Multnomah Street which is a major bike corridor. Residents with cars won’t be left out. The complex also includes a parking garage.
Hassalo on Eighth will not be adding to Portland’s sewage system. Davis says sewage will be treated on site by something called the living machine and water from the roofs will be retained on the ground by a water feature they call the water street.
