A substitute teacher in Spokane, Washington accused of assaulting a 6th grade student has a past. The Spokesman-Review reports Matthew Deryan, 46, arrested last month in Idaho for drunk driving was earlier caught altering documents in his divorce case and had a restraining order taken out against him by his wife.
Deryan was arrested for assault on Friday for allegedly slapping and shoving students at Trent Elementary School.
The district superintendent says Deryan passed a background check in June, 2010. John Glenewinkel also says Deryan signed forms for the past two school years saying he had not been charged with any serious crimes.
