Diversity Try Fails

Former Portland School Board member Marc Abrams says he’s disappointed a black psychologist, who has said homosexuality is a mental illness, was almost allowed to speak today at Jefferson High School.

Dr. Umar Johnson had been invited talk to students as part of an effort to promote diversity.  But after the media looked into his background, the invitation was withdrawn. Abrams says someone in the district’s central office “failed to do their homework.”

Abrams says he doesn’t want district headquarters to control speech in schools. But he adds–  a lot of  gay and lesbian students could have been hurt if Dr. Johnson had been allowed to speak.

Abrams served on the school board from 1995 to 2003.  He’s also co-hosts  “Kremer&Abrams,” Sunday mornings, 8-10, on KXL.
