In May, 1991, a fiery crash in Cowlitz county, Washington, killed a trucker and his unauthorized female passenger. The Washington State Patrol says flames destroyed any identification she might have had. According to the Patrol, this is the last unidentified person buried in Cowlitz county.
The agency recently reopened the case, partly because of advances in DNA identification, and also because the detective who worked so long on the case is close to retirement and wants some answers.
The victim’s remains were recently exhumed. They’ve been sent to a lab in King County. There, they’ll undergo facial reconstruction by a forensic anthropologist. Then, they’ll sent to the University of Northern Texas for DNA extraction. Eventually the DNA will be entered into databases to find a match or a relative.
