Gas Leak on Sauvies Island Prompts Evacuation

Written by Christina Kemp on January 10, 2014

A gas leak on Sauvies Island closed the bridge and had fire crews evacuating  people in a quarter-mile radius.

Portland Fire Lieutenant Rich Chatman spoke with our partners at KGW Newschannel 8. He says the vents were doing their job of easing excess pressure. The vented gas rises and does not pose a health hazard in general.

A transfer station on Sauvies Island loudly vented natural gas for about an hour this morning.
