China Door Still Shut On Northwest Shellfish

Geoduck

Just before Christmas China’s government imposed an import ban on west coast geoducks (gooey ducks).  Washington and Oregon are among states where the very large edible clams are harvested.

China says it found high levels of inorganic arsenic in geoducks from Puget Sound which prompted the import ban.

Now, Washington health officials say they’re sending test results to state and federal partners showing levels of arsenic in geoducks from Puget Sound have levels of arsenic below China’s standard.   Those partners are working with the Chinese government to reopen the shellfish trade.  The import ban has resulted in some Northwest workers losing their jobs.
