MOLALLA, Ore. — Alcohol is said to have caused a driver to crash their ride into the Molalla River. The vehicle went off Molalla Forest Road east of town over a 30′ cliff and hit rocks before landing upside down in the water just after midnight Saturday with two people inside.
The passenger got free and swam to the opposite shore. Witnesses waded across to help her until paramedics arrived. 23-year-old Danie Fournier from Oregon City is in stable condition.
Another witness went into the water to help pull out the driver. Both of them ended up in need of rescue from the vehicle that was nearly submerged. Rescuers brought the men to shore with a rapid deployment craft and then used ropes to bring them up the steep hillside. 22-year-old Giovanni Demartino of Clackamas is in critical condition. He’s likely to face charges of DUII and assault.
Several good Samaritans are credited with helping the victims survive. They’re recognized as 25-year-old Douglas Parkin from Sandy, 31-year-old Michael Holliday and Ricky Hendrickson, 34, both from Colton.
