A British Columbia lawyer representing 12 victims from the 2012 charter bus crash on Interstate 84 near Pendleton filed a lawsuit Monday at the Umatilla County Courthouse seeking $700 million.
The East Oregonian newspaper reports the group is seeking a jury trial on accusations that tour operators were negligent. The lawsuit also accused ODOT for failing to make an icy stretch of the interstate safe and failing to erect barriers to keep the bus from going over a cliff.
Nine people were killed and 38 injured as the charter bus from Vancouver, British Columbia was returning from a trip to Las Vegas. Officials say the driver lost control of the bus after hitting an icy patch on the freeway and crashed down a ravine.
