LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. — Four people were lucky to get out alive just before daybreak on Monday when fire swarmed their condominium on Greenridge Court. There was no working smoke detector.
Andrew Wong woke up when he heard a noise and found fire outside the front door. With the exit blocked, he and his girlfriend got onto a balcony and called 9-1-1.
Wong’s bed-ridden grandfather was asleep on a couch in the living room and had to be carried out by firefighters. Crews also woke up grandma who was asleep on the second floor.
“This could have resulted in a very sad situation had he not woken up,” said Deputy Fire Marshall Gert Zoutendijk.
Investigators are looking for what sparked the fire that caused an estimated $15,000 in damage.
Zoutendijk added: “The only smoke alarm in the condo had been taken down and was the main reason the grandparents did not wake up”.
