VANCOUVER — A man who has been burglarizing homes on the west side of town over the past month while people were asleep is off the streets after he tempted fate one too many times.
He’s been getting in through unlocked windows and doors about a dozen times to steal jewelry, electronics and other personal belongings. This time he smashed a window to get his hands on what he wanted.
31-year-old David Popplewell was caught early Wednesday morning leaving a burglary at West 34th and Columbia Street. Officers chased after on foot and used a K9 to track Popplewell to the yard of a home thirteen blocks away at 21st and Washington where the stolen loot was recovered.
Victim Toma Amendolara sprung from his bed when a window was smashed and the burglar reached inside and stole a laptop computer. He called 9-1-1 leading to Popplewell’s arrest.
“Our kids are kind of scared. We just kind of said, ‘He did get caught’. We are still figuring out how we are going to explain it,” Amendolara told our news partner KGW.
Authorities say remember to lock up before going to bed or leaving, even pet doors. All the crimes happened within a ten-block area.
