Police have arrested the man who repeatedly punched a TriMet bus driver. The driver was beat up by a passenger who didn’t pay the correct fare.

This happened in the St. John’s neighborhood last night. Trimet was able to capture an image of the suspect and police used that to locate 39-year-old Daemon Bowman. He is charged with third degree assault among other charges.

PORTLAND — A passenger who didn’t pay the correct fare is accused of assaulting a TriMet bus driver on Thursday night in the St. Johns area of North Portland.

The suspect boarded the bus at Kellogg Street and St. Louis Avenue.  The driver was on a break and had parked the line #4 at Richmond Avenue and Syracuse Street just before 11:00.  TriMet says the man began yelling at the driver and punched her several times in the face after a fare dispute.  The driver fought back and the passenger ran off.

“We believe that any assault is one too many, and we do all we can to catch and prosecute the suspects involved, as well as deploy security resources to prevent such incidents,” said TriMet’s Roberta Altstadt.

Dozens of the 1,200 operators are assaulted and harassed every year, but the numbers are actually down slightly this year than the two previous.  There were 38 incidents in 2011, 37 last year and 29 so far in 2013.

Police searched the area for an African American man in his 20’s with no luck.  He’s said to be 5’5″, 300 lbs. with a beard and mustache wearing a yellow hoodie or jacket.

A reward of $1,000 is up for grabs for the tip that leads to an arrest and you can call (503) 238-RIDE (7433) with any leads.
