Kids Fall Into Icy Milwaukie Pond

Written by Jeremy Scott on December 10, 2013

MILWAUKIE, Ore. — Playing on an icy pond landed some kids in the bitter cold water fighting for survival early Monday night.  A homeless man called 911 saying that he heard them fall through the ice and scream for help at the Minthorn Natural Area off 37th and International Way.

Six kids, 12 and 13-years-old were playing on the frozen pond when three of them fell though the ice.  Rescuers searched along the bank and found evidence that someone went into the water, but they didn’t find any of the kids.  After more than an hour, authorities learned that they got out on their own and left before help arrived.  Police confirmed that all were safe at home.

“Water is a dangerous thing to begin with.  Throw in these frigid temperatures on top of it and it becomes incredibly deadly very quickly,” said Brandon Paxton of Clackamas Fire.

While this ended well, not everyone is so lucky.  Authorities say stay away from the water and frozen ponds during cold periods because the ice, although it might appear to support your weight, can actually be very fragile and deadly.
