Longshoremen Head Back To Work

Members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union are headed back to work under terms of a contract they rejected overwhelmingly just before Christmas.  Workers say it was either that or have a coalition of terminal operators lock them out and and potentially replace or dump the longshoremen entirely.

Employees rejected a final contract offer with 94% majority.  Now it appears they'll work under the new terms and file a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board.

The union believes the employers coalition threatened a lockout before a true impasse had been reached.  It's unclear how long an appeals process could take. 

At least four Pacific Northwest grain terminals would have been affected, including Portland and Seattle.  The terminals handle up to a quarter of this county's exports.
