This was the day the U.S. Agriculture Department was supposed to begin collecting a fee from Christmas tree growers to help promote their industry.  For years, federal rules have allowed for such collections from farmers, including tree growers, if they petitioned for it.

The executive director of the Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Association, Bryan Ostlund, says the surcharge is $.15 per tree.  The money would go to a national fund that would be used to promote Christmas trees and keep people buying them.

No other state grows more Christmas trees than Oregon.  Ostlund says the supply for this season is plentiful and prices are reasonable.
