Today, we observe Veterans Day.  It's an official United States federal holiday honoring this country's armed service veterans, and coincides with similar holidays celebrated in other parts of the world marking the anniversary of the end of World War I.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day.  WWII veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama proposed in 1945 to expand Armistice Day to recognize all veterans.  He led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea.  The bill was presented to Congress, and as President, Eisenhower signed the bill into law in 1954.  It was amended to replace "Armistice" and has been known as Veterans Day ever since.
