A little girl playing in her neighborhood didn't make it home.  She was hit and killed by a car while crossing the street on Thursday night.  There's no crosswalk at Southeast 136th and Ellis.  Neighbors say more must be done to make it safer.  This was the 8th fatal crash of the year in Portland, the fourth involving a pedestrian.

5-year-old Morgan Cook was holding the hand of a 13-year-old when she broke free and tried to cross on her own.  She was hit by an oncoming car southbound on 136th.  68-year-old Huong Bacon was behind the wheel.  Police say she was not impaired or speeding, and was not cited.

The girl's mother says her other daughter was hit in the same area in 2010, and two nights earlier called 9-1-1 when a woman was also struck there.  She believes Morgan would've survived if there had been a crosswalk.

Mayor Charlie Hales gave his sympathies, saying "As a parent, I can find no words that are sufficient to describe this horrible occurrence."


Morgan went to Gilbert Park Elementary.  The David Douglas School District has also expressed concerns about student safety.
