Portland Mayor Charlie Hales was one of 34 leaders to receive a letter from the USOC asking if Portland is interested in playing host to the world for the 2024 summer Olympic games. It would be very difficult for Portland to land the games, since the IOC has very tough requirements from the host city, and the other 33 cities are already ahead of Portland in meeting the criteria. That includes 45,000 hotel rooms (currently the Portland metro area has half that), an Olympic village capable of housing 16,500 persons, a workforce of 200,000, and an extra $3 Billion to spend on operating costs. That price does not include infrastructure upgrades, or the cost to build new facilities.
