Inauguration Irony
Today, Americans turn their gaze to Washington D.C.
for the inauguration of a President. But
for me, the far greater expression of American rights and freedoms happened on
Saturday. Thousands of people gathered
on the steps of the state capitol in Salem…and in all fifty state capitols around
America. They exercised their rights to
freedom of assembly, their right to petition the government for redress of
grievances and their freedom of speech.
And all of that was in support of another right, the individual right to
bear arms, contained in the constitution and reaffirmed by the Supreme Court. We’ve heard a lot about that right in the
past six weeks because of the collision of two major events. The first of course was the murder of school
children in Connecticut. And the second
is the efforts of one American to abridge those rights. The irony is that the man being sworn in to a
second term of office as president…is the one that threatens the rights of
those who gathered in Salem on Saturday.
It was a pleasure to be invited to speak to that group…and especially
gratifying to see that the group behaved itself perfectly…no adverse events…no
trash left behind…and the lone counter protestor at the event was treated respectfully. God Bless America.
